Summary

From 1 August, 2024, new FASTag rules mandate KYC completion by October 31, 2024 to prevent extra toll fees and penalties.

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has announced new FASTag rules for users, which will be effective from tomorrow i.e. Thursday (1 August, 2024). These updates aim to improve toll payment processes and reduce delays at toll booths across the country.

As per the new rules, users must complete their KYC verification by October 31, 2024. FASTag service providers need to finish the KYC process for all FASTags issued between 3 and 5 years ago by this date. Additionally, the NPCI has set the fees for issuing and reissuing FASTags, as well as the security deposit and minimum recharge amounts.

Along with these new rules, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has announced that vehicles without a properly attached FASTag on their windscreen will be charged double the toll fee. This measure is designed to minimize delays at toll plazas and improve traffic flow.

Let us now see some new FASTag rules which will be effective from 1 August, 2024.

New FASTag Rules Effective from 1 August, 2024

Linking Vehicle Registration and Chassis Numbers

After purchasing a new vehicle, you must link the vehicle registration number and chassis number with the FASTag within 90 days. If it is not updated within this period, the FASTag will be temporarily suspended.

After this, an additional 30 days will be given to update the details. If still not updated, then FASTag will be blacklisted. FASTag service providers are required to complete KYC for all FASTags that are five and three years old by October 31, 2024.

Replacement of Old FASTags

FASTags older than 5 years must be replaced to make sure they are functioning correctly. The replacement process must be completed by October 31, 2024.

KYC Update for 3-Year-Old FASTags

KYC updates are mandatory for FASTags issued 3 years ago to keep user information updated.

Mandatory Activity for FASTags

Some FASTag companies require that the FASTag remain active by making at least one transaction every three months. If there is no transaction in this period, the FASTag will become inactive, and you will need to visit the portal to reactivate it. This rule may be challenging for those who don’t use their vehicle often and do not pass through tolls regularly.

Database Verification

FASTag providers must verify their databases to make sure all information is accurate and up-to-date. This includes checking vehicle details and ensuring the FASTag is correctly linked to the user’s mobile number.

Mobile Number Linkage

FASTags must be linked to the user’s mobile number for proper functioning and communication.

Photo Upload Requirement

Users must upload clear photos of their car’s front and side to the FASTag system. This helps in the verification process and assures the FASTag is properly linked with the vehicle.
