Summary

Zomato’s new app 'District' expands beyond food delivery to offer dining, movies, shopping, and more, challenging BookMyShow.

Zomato is expanding its services with a new app to be launched soon known as ‘District’. This platform will go beyond food delivery to offer a range of services including dining out, movie tickets, sports events, live shows, shopping, and staycations, all in one place.

This New District app aims to compete with BookMyShow, which currently leads the online movie ticket market in India with a 60% share. Zomato’s CEO, Deepinder Goyal, announced this move in a letter to shareholders, marking the company’s entry into a wider range of lifestyle services.

How Will the District App Work?

Company’s new District app aims to become a one-stop shop for various “going-out” activities. It will build on Zomato’s existing dining services and add features for booking movie tickets, sports events, live shows, shopping, and staycations.

CEO Deepinder Goyal believes that the District app could significantly change how people plan their outings. If successful, the District app could become a major new part of Zomato’s business, alongside its current food delivery and quick commerce services.

After sharing Zomato’s first-quarter results with shareholders, CEO Deepinder Goyal talked about the exciting growth opportunities with their new District app. He mentioned that while Zomato and Blinkit focus on serving customers at home, there’s a big chance to grow in the “going-out” market.

Goyal also mentioned that Zomato’s dining-out business is doing very well, which is currently generating over $500 million in annual sales.

In June, Zomato also announced that it is in talks to acquire Paytm’s movie and ticketing business, further expanding into the ‘going-out’ sector.

Unlike its competitors Swiggy and BigBasket, which have developed super apps, Zomato is concentrating on merging its Dining-out and Zomato Live services into the new District app. This approach will aim to provide a unified and complete experience for customers seeking various entertainment and outing options.
