Summary

Introducing 'Bha': A revolutionary shoe sizing system designed specifically for Indian feet. Based on research it offers 8 sizes for different age group.

For ages, Indians have struggled with shoes that aren’t quite right because they’re mostly made for American or European feet. This leads to discomfort, blisters, and even foot shape changes. But now, Indian scientists have come up with something new called “Bha.” It’s a way to size shoes specifically for Indian feet. It’s named “Bha” for ‘Bharat’.

A comprehensive survey, conducted from December 2021 to March 2022, involved 3D foot scanning of over 100,000 individuals across 79 locations in India. This extensive study yielded valuable insights into the size, dimensions, and structure of the typical Indian foot.

Survey Findings

According to a recent survey, Indian feet tend to be wider compared to those in Europe or America. This has resulted in many Indians wearing shoes that are either too large or poorly fitting due to the inadequacies of the current footwear sizing system. The study also uncovered that the average foot size growth for Indian women peaks at 11 years old, while for Indian men, it peaks at around 15 or 16 years old.

Furthermore, the survey highlighted that excessive tightening of shoelaces is a common practice, causing disruptions in normal blood flow for the wearer. This issue particularly affects the elderly and individuals with diabetes, leading to discomfort, injuries, and various foot health issues.

Introducing the ‘Bha’ System

In response to these findings, the ‘Bha’ shoe sizing system emerges as a revolutionary solution. This simplified approach offers eight footwear sizes tailored to different age groups, aiming to accommodate approximately 85% of Indians.

The ‘Bha’ system categorizes sizes as follows:

  • I— infants (0 to 1 year)
  • II— babies (1 to 3 years)
  • III— small children (4 to 6 years)
  • IV— children (7 to 11 years)
  • V— girls (12 to 13 years)
  • VI— boys (12 to 14 years)
  • VII— Women (14 years and above)
  • VIII— Men (15 years and above)

Notably, ‘Bha’ eliminates the need for half-sizes, simplifying the sizing process significantly.

Key Features of ‘Bha’

  • Simpler Sizing: The ‘Bha’ system streamlines the sizing process by offering eight distinct sizes based on age groups, replacing the complex array of options seen in the current system.
  • Better Fit: Taking both foot length and width into account, ‘Bha’ promises a more comfortable fit for the majority of Indians.
  • Manufacturing Efficiency: By doing away with half-sizes, ‘Bha’ has the potential to streamline manufacturing processes, potentially reducing costs and enhancing efficiency.

While ‘Bha’ is still in the developmental stage, it is anticipated to be fully implemented by 2025. Prior to its launch, a trial is expected to ensure the effectiveness of the new sizing system.
