Summary

The major thing for me is learning what I didn't know in terms of money management. Because, without that, I wouldn't have been able to understand to where I stand.

Meet Sathyapriya Arulmozhi, a software developer at Cognizant and a 1% Club member since August 2022. As a tech person, she loves to learn about new technologies and skills. But she didn’t stop there! She is also learning Japanese and is JLPT N3 Certified.

She believes that reading books is something that comes to her naturally and that it is her superpower!

And when she was reading the bestseller “Rich Dad Poor Dad” 3 years back, she realised the importance of investing.

Although the internet gives a lot of knowledge when it comes to finances, Sathyapriya preferred learning from a mentor. Amongst the readily available materials, there was hardly any step by step guide that could help a beginner like Sathyapriya.

She did find experts who were offering courses and guidance abroad. But they were phenomenally expensive. It was in the second half of 2022 that she came across Shashank’s Masterclass on Stock Market. She knew this was it!!

Before attending this masterclass, she used to give a part of her salary towards the family expenses and the remaining part would be in her savings account.

What were your major learning after joining the club?

I learned about multiple avenues where I could invest my money and get good returns! I got to know about mutual funds, bonds, ETFs, index funds, SGBs, and more. So, while I’m working full time and also upskilling in other areas, I now have plans to diversify my investment portfolio further.

Please tell us about your current portfolio.

Currently, my portfolio is-

FD – 25%

SGB- 50%

25%- Physical Gold

Only with these 3 investments, I have earned decent returns since 2022.

Any goals you are working towards?

The only long term goal is achieving my FIRE number by 40. So, I have a plan to make my fundamentals strong and start my investment journey by the end of this year. I’m confident that with the help of the community, I can learn as I go.

Apart from financial knowledge, how else has the club helped you?

I attended the Illuminex event in Chennai which happened last year. Along with learning a lot of insights, I also made new friends from different cities!

And I also had the opportunity to host a livestream for the entire community. This was a huge opportunity for me to share my learnings with an audience, as I’m also currently learning and practising public speaking.

Illuminex, Chennai

What value has this journey added to your life?

The major thing for me is learning what I didn’t know in terms of money management. Because, without that, I wouldn’t have been able to understand to where I stand. Now I’m tracking my expenses and I have an idea where I can save more. And am exploring avenues which is suitable for me and my goals, to start investing. It has been an eye-opening experience.
