The National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) set a new world record on Wednesday (5 June, 2024) for the most transactions in a single trading day.

CEO Ashish Chauhan shared on social media site X that the NSE processed 1971 crore (19.71 billion) orders and 28.55 crore (280.55 million) trades in just 6 hours and 15 minutes, from 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM.

“@nseindia handled the highest ever – world record – number of transactions in a single day today on June 5,2024 in a 6 hours and 15 minutes (915 am to 330 pm) single trading day-   1971 crore (19.71 billion) orders per day. 28.55 crore (280.55 million) trades per day,” said Chauhan on X.

According to analysts, Indian shares surged over 3% on Wednesday (5 June, 2024), achieving their best one-day gain in over three years. The Nifty index closed at 21,884.50, dropping 1,379.40 points, or 5.93%, from the previous session.

Today, Nifty opened strong and gained momentum throughout the session. The 50-stock index closed at 22,620, rising by 736 points or 3.36%.

Banking and financial stocks played a key role in driving the market, with the Nifty Bank index jumping by 2,126 points or 4.53% to finish at 49,055.

This boost came after key allies pledged support to form a new government, following a narrow win for the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

The major contributors to the index were HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Reliance Industries, with additional support from Infosys, ITC, and Mahindra & Mahindra.

The top gainers included Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone, IndusInd Bank, Hindalco Industries, and Mahindra & Mahindra. On the other hand, only two stocks from the Nifty pack, Larsen & Toubro and Bharat Petroleum Corporation, ended with losses.

Chauhan also declared another achievement on Saturday (1 June, 2024) that the NSE received an award from Global Custodian for implementing T+1 settlement in India.
