Summary

Essential car insurance add-ons to protect your vehicle this monsoon. Learn about flood damage risks and comprehensive coverage options.

During the rainy season, car owners encounter specific challenges like floods, waterlogging, and higher accident risks. Given the forecast of an above normal monsoon by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) this year, safeguarding your vehicle with specialized monsoon car insurance add-ons becomes crucial.

Water entering cars can cause damage to the engine, electrical systems, and interiors, leading to significant financial burdens for repairs. To avoid such expenses, it’s important to select the right car insurance cover with add-ons to safeguard against flood-related damages.

How Does Flood Damage Your Car?

Waterlogging or floods can create serious problems in your car such as engine failure, electrical system damage, rust, and unpleasant odors. Prolonged exposure to water might also cause gearbox issues.

When water seeps into a parked vehicle, it can harm the interior, including the seats and panels. While some of these issues appear immediately, others may emerge gradually over time.

Type of Car Insurance Cover You Should Have

Many cities are unprepared to deal with extremely heavy rainfall and resulting floods due to shifting weather patterns, unplanned development, and inadequate drainage systems.

When purchasing car insurance, it’s essential to consider the growing frequency of heavy rain. In addition to a standard comprehensive car insurance policy, it’s advisable to opt for add-on covers like zero depreciation and engine protection cover.

Comprehensive Car Insurance Policy

Comprehensive car insurance policies cover flood-related damages, but the reimbursement depends on the car’s age.

For plastic and rubber parts, a 50% depreciation applies, meaning only half of the repair cost is covered, and the policyholder must pay the rest. However, a standalone comprehensive policy may not cover all flood-related damages.

Add-on Car Insurance Policy

An add-on car insurance policy, also known as a rider or endorsement, is an additional coverage option that can be purchased along with a standard comprehensive car insurance policy. These add-ons provide extra protection beyond what is typically covered by the basic insurance policy.

For example: zero depreciation cover, engine protection cover, roadside assistance, consumables cover, key and lock replacement cover, personal belongings cover, etc.

A standalone car insurance plan does not cover engine damage due to water ingress, but getting an add-on cover for engine protection can help you claim a substantial portion of repair costs.

You can also choose a consumables cover, which covers the cost of replacing engine parts, including engine oils and lubricants.
