A FIRE number is the amount of money you need to save to achieve financial independence so that you can retire early. You need to accumulate money for living so that you don’t need to work for the rest of your life.
FIRE number is different for every person because it depends on various factors like lifestyle, expenses, and expected retirement age. Flexibility and independence are promised by this movement, as long as you behave responsibly and show resolve from a young age.
You would be required to save heavily and allocate a significant amount of your salary to investments if you wanted to join this movement. The 1992 best-seller ‘Your Money or Your Life’ by Vicki Robin and Joe Dominguez inspired thousands of people and gave the FIRE movement legitimacy.
If you want to reach a FIRE amount, you need to save aggressively so that your investment can generate a time frame to offset your annual expenses. (You can master the art and science of retiring early here)
- High Savings: You need to save at least 50% or more every month.
- Minimalist Lifestyle: You need to sacrifice your want and live a very minimalist life
- High Investment: You need to invest aggressively in a diversified portfolio.
How to find the FIRE number?
To achieve financial independence, you need to save and invest 25 times your annual spending. For example, assume you spend Rs 50,000 per month. Your annual spending would be Rs 6 lakh and your FIRE number would be Rs 50,000 x 25 = Rs 1.5 crore.
Do note, this Rs 1.5 crore is in case you want to retire today. If it’s sometime in the future, you’d need to account for inflation as well.
