After Bhutan, Mauritius, Singapore, Nepal, and the UAE, Indians can now use RuPay cards in Maldives as well. During an event in New Delhi on Monday (October 7, 2024), Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu witnessed the first-ever RuPay card transaction.

A significant highlight of the visit was the virtual launch of a new runway at Hanimaadhoo International Airport in the Maldives, a project backed by India. PM Modi also announced that the Greater Male Connectivity Project will be accelerated. This project will aim to connect major islands in the Maldives with modern transportation networks, improving access and promoting economic growth in the area.
