After Bhutan, Mauritius, Singapore, Nepal, and the UAE, Indians can now use RuPay cards in Maldives as well. During an event in New Delhi on Monday (October 7, 2024), Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu witnessed the first-ever RuPay card transaction.

The introduction of RuPay cards is intended to simplify transactions for tourists and residents in the Maldives. This initiative aims to facilitate smoother business operations and strengthen economic cooperation between the two countries. It aligns with India’s broader strategy to expand its economic presence in the region while providing support to the Maldives’ financial system.

The leaders further discussed about important infrastructure projects and digital advancements. A significant highlight of the visit was the virtual launch of a new runway at Hanimaadhoo International Airport in the Maldives, a project backed by India. PM Modi also announced that the Greater Male Connectivity Project will be accelerated. This project will aim to connect major islands in the Maldives with modern transportation networks, improving access and promoting economic growth in the area.

The leaders’ first transaction using RuPay cards in the Maldives indicates the strengthening of digital ties between India and the Maldives. PM Modi also highlighted the importance of improving digital connectivity as part of their collaboration.
