Summary

SEBI and NISM introduce a free online investor certification exam to boost financial literacy and investment knowledge in Indian markets.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) in association with the National Institute of Securities Markets (NISM) introduced a free, voluntary online investor certification exam on Tuesday (11 June, 2024).

This exam aims to help individuals gain in-depth knowledge about investing in the Indian securities markets.

“Developed in collaboration with the National Institute of Securities Markets (NISM), this voluntary certification aims to help investors test their knowledge of markets and investing. It is designed to assist individuals in their journey towards gaining comprehensive knowledge about investing in the Indian securities markets,” said SEBI in a press release.

SEBI introduced this exam to promote financial literacy and investor awareness in Indian securities markets. The initiative aims to empower individuals with essential knowledge about basic savings and investment concepts.

At the launch, Shri Ananth Narayan G, SEBI’s Whole Time Member, highlighted that SEBI’s new Investor Certification Examination marks a significant advancement in digital financial education for the securities market. This online exam aims to improve investors’ understanding of the investment process and associated risks, promoting a more efficient and risk-aligned investment approach.

How to appear 

The exam aims to develop a foundational understanding of basic finance concepts, including saving, investment, budgeting, and inflation. It will also provide information about various government schemes, structure of securities markets, covering both primary and secondary markets, roles of stock exchanges, depositories, and regulatory bodies. Further, the exam will educate about investment risks, such as credit risk, market risk, and liquidity risk.
