ā€œYou can expect an amount between Rs 10-15 lakh depending upon the number of cases you have to file,ā€ Advocate Vandana Shah said in a recent interaction with Sharan Hegde, Co-founder and CEO, The 1% Club, on The 1% Club Show.

Vandana is an eminent divorce and family lawyer, a best-selling author, and a recognized figure in the legal fraternity.

Though the divorce rate of India is globally the lowest around 1.1% but the significant surge in recent cases has raised concerns

During the interaction, Vandana talked about numerous divorce cases she handled and also about the complexities of divorce.

The family law expert said all the 27-28 years old people looking for marriage should have separate accounts. Having separate finances will help in protecting them if things go wrong post-marriage.

Commenting on the trend of young couples registering joint property to save taxes, Vandana said, ā€œBest Taxation angle may not be the Best Matrimonial angle.ā€ She pointed out that if the wife files for divorce after marriage, she can claim 50% of the property you jointly owned.

Talking about the precautions young men should take to safeguard themselves in case they are living in ancestral houses with their  parents, she gave some interesting advice. You should live separately as post divorce the wife could claim that as it’s her matrimonial home. So if you’re a guy living in a rented house currently , it’s a good option going forward.

Commenting on big fat Indian weddings, Vandana suggested having all the wedding bills handy. All the costs incurred during your wedding should be documented or simply have bills of all. Make sure to keep a note of every gift received in order to safeguard yourself against any false dowry cases in the future at the time of divorce.

The family law expert  urged all the people, who are past their mid 20s and planning for their marriage,  to take precautions in case the marriage falls apart and you are pushed against the wall.
