It began when Elluswamy posted an article on X on Sunday (9 June, 2024) to praise Musk’s role in advancing AI and autonomy at Tesla. The engineer highlighted Musk’s encouragement for the team to achieve remarkable feats.

When Elon Musk discovered this post, he reposted it and praised Elluswamy. Musk said, “Thanks Ashok! Ashok was the first person to join the Tesla AI/Autopilot team and ultimately rose to lead all AI/Autopilot software. Without him and our awesome team, we would just be another car company looking for an autonomy supplier that doesn’t exist. Btw, I never suggested that he say anything and I had no idea he wrote this until I saw it 10 mins ago!”

Since Elon Musk shared this post, it has attracted more than 24 Million Viewers on social media platform X and continues to grow. Many users also engaged in the comments section, sharing their reactions.

Who is Ashok Elluswamy?

According to his LinkedIn profile, Ashok Elluswamy is a robotics engineer who has extensive experience in computer vision, perception, and planning/control.

Currently living in San Francisco, he was the first engineer hired for Tesla’s Autopilot team. Elluswamy has been part of Tesla for a decade, joining in June 2014.

After 2.5 years, he progressed to the role of senior software engineer. In May 2019, he was elevated to Director of Tesla Autopilot Software, a position he currently holds.

Elluswamy holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Electronics and Communication from the College of Engineering, Guindy in Chennai, where he was praised by one of his professors as one of the “best students.”

He later completed a Master of Science in Robotic Systems Development from Carnegie Mellon University.

Before joining Tesla, Elluswamy worked as a Software Engineer at WABCO Vehicle Control Systems for more than two years and he later interned at the Volkswagen Electronic Research Lab.
