Using the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is super easy for sending money, but what if you send it to the wrong person? Or maybe someone took money from your account without permission? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.
In this article, we’ll show you how to get your money back by reversing a UPI transaction. It’s like hitting the undo button for your payment! We’ll be following the guidelines set by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). So, if you ever find yourself in a situation with UPI, keep reading to learn how to fix it step-by-step.
Reversing UPI transactions: What You Need to Know
UPI transactions are fast and efficient, making it hard to fix mistakes once the money is sent.
Yet, the NPCI has something called “UPI Auto-Reversal” to help in these situations. But it’s not for every transaction.
If the person you sent money to has already accepted the transaction, it usually cannot be reversed. This means if they have already claimed or withdrawn the funds, a reversal might not be possible.

Here’s when you can request a reversal:
- Sent money to the wrong ID: If you mistakenly entered the wrong UPI ID or phone number when sending money, you should try to get the transaction reversed.
- Unauthorized Payment: If a payment was made without your permission, such as without entering your user ID, you should definitely try to get your money back.
- Fraudulent Transactions: If the transaction was fraudulent or unauthorized, you have every reason to request a reversal.
- Failed Transaction: If a transaction failed but the money was still deducted from your account, you should aim to reclaim that money. This can happen when the recipient did not accept the payment.
Steps to Request a UPI Transaction Reversal
- Inform the bank
Get in touch with your bank’s or UPI service provider’s customer support right away. Give them all the important details like the transaction reference number, date, and amount. These details are crucial to start the reversal process.
- Explain Why
Clearly explain why you need the reversal, whether it’s sending money to the wrong person or an unauthorized transaction. This helps the support team understand your case better.
- Respect Time Limits
Pay attention to any time limits set by your bank or UPI service provider for requesting reversals. It’s important to start the process within this timeframe to improve your chances of success.
- Wait for Approval
After providing the necessary information, your bank or UPI provider will review your request. If it meets the criteria and gets approved, they’ll start the UPI Auto-Reversal process.
- Confirmation
You’ll receive confirmation from your bank or UPI provider about the reversal’s outcome. If it’s successful, the refunded amount will show up back in your account. Remember, this process might take a bit of time.
6. Contact NPCI
If your issue isn’t resolved as you requested, you can reach out to the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). The NPCI, created by the banking regulator RBI, is responsible for managing retail payments and settlement systems in India.
