IMD's latest forecast says Mumbai city and its suburbs will see partly cloudy sky with "very likely" heatwave conditions for 24 hours

As Mumbaikars are waiting for the monsoon season to arrive, the city is also closely following the news of Dubai’s recent flooding. But the question on every mind today is, when will it rain in Mumbai?

There is no concrete answer to the above question as of today. However, Mumbai might start seeing regular rains with the onset of monsoon in June first or second week. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) recently forecasted above normal rains across the country this year.

For Wednesday, IMD’s latest forecast says Mumbai city and its suburbs will see partly cloudy sky with “very likely” heatwave conditions for 24 hours. “Partly cloudy sky. Heat wave conditions very likely in city and suburbs,” IMD said in its 24-hour forecast issued at 2 pm on Wednesday (April 17).

The IMD further predicted that maximum and minimum temperatures around the city will be approx 36 deg. C. and 28 deg. C. The IMD clearly sees no rains soon even as Pune has witnessed heavy showers.

Relief from Heat

Meanwhile, Mumbai Rains, a popular weather handle on X, today said the heatwave conditions in the city has significantly declined. “And it’s confirmed, the heatwave has ended for Mumbai! Mumbai has seen a mammoth 5-6 degrees fall in the last 24 hours! Mumbai City & suburbs have noticed a significant downfall in temperatures this afternoon, amid heatwave alert given by IMD to Mumbai & MMR, Don’t expect hot weather hereafter in Mumbai for the rest of the week,” Mumbai Rains posted on X.

It further said weather will continue to improve hereafter. “A very humid afternoon has been noticed in the city today, yet not falling in the heatwave category, further the Westerlies will give healthy sea breezes during the evening, and will make the weather more pleasant after next 24-36 hrs. Weather will continue to improve hereafter.”

Flood in Dubai

Meanwhile, Dubai has witnessed severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall. The city has been hit by a record-breaking 142 mm of rain within a few hours, leading to waterlogging and road closures. The situation in Dubai has raised concerns about Mumbai’s preparedness for the monsoon season.

Mumbai is no stranger to the impact of heavy rainfall. Every year, the city is hit by chaotic traffic, waterlogging, and flooding during the monsoon season. However, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has assured citizens that it is well-prepared for this year’s monsoon.

Will Mumbai Be Ready for Monsoon?

The BMC claims to have undertaken pre-monsoon operations like as drain cleaning, nullah cleaning, and tree trimming. The corporation has also established a disaster management control room and sent personnel across the city to handle any emergency circumstances.

However, the people of Mumbai are not fully convinced. Many people have voiced worry that the city’s infrastructure is not prepared to manage significant rains, particularly in low-lying regions. The recent floods in Dubai increased these fears.

As the monsoon season approaches, people in Mumbai hope for a seamless and safe movement. The city’s officials have stated that they are fully prepared and have taken all essential precautions to safeguard the safety of its inhabitants.
