In today’s tech-savvy world, the convenience of charging devices in public places like airports, hotels, and cafes comes with its own set of risks. The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has issued a warning about the prevalent ‘USB Charger Scam’, urging users to be cautious when using public charging stations.
Juice-jacking attacks, as described by TechTarget, exploit infected USB ports to compromise devices through the exposed pins of a USB cable. CERT-In highlights the possibility of hackers installing malware apps on unsuspecting users’ devices via these compromised ports, potentially leading to data encryption, ransom demands, or data theft.

To protect against such threats, CERT-In recommends the following best practices:
1. Conduct safety checks before using any public USB charging point or “portable wall chargers”, especially during emergencies.
2. Opt for electrical wall charging sockets whenever possible.
3. Use personal cables, adapters, or power banks instead of public charging stations.
4. Ensure your smartphone is locked and features like USB debugging and pairing options are disabled before connecting to a public USB cable.
5. Power down your device if feasible before charging.
By following these precautions endorsed by CERT-In, users can reduce the risks associated with public charging infrastructure and safeguard themselves against potential cyber threats.
