The Apple ecosystem employed over 150,000 people directly since the introduction of Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme in 2021, making it the country’s largest blue-collar job creator, according to IT Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar.
The minister shared data on employment created by the Apple ecosystem on X (formerly Twitter). He also stated that over 3,00,000 people have been employed indirectly, taking the total new jobs created by the Apple ecosystem to more than 4 lakh.
The achievements were made possible through the government’s PLI scheme. But why did Apple start manufacturing phones in India? Let’s look into it.
Apple began manufacturing phones in India due to the country’s status as the world’s second-largest smartphone market. The introduction of the PLI scheme provided Apple with an opportunity to start producing phones locally in India. This move was seen as a strategic decision by Apple to capitalize on the growing market in India.
For this financial year till February, the production of iPhones has crossed Rs. 1 lakh crore, with 70% of exports contributing to the total market value of Rs. 1.6 lakh crore, the minister said.
In the peak season, June-September, iPhone factories are going to hire more than 10,000 people, he added.

Apple has joined hands with suppliers like Foxconn, Wistron, and Pegatron to promote local component production and they also assemble the latest iPhone models.
These three companies have generated 77,000 direct jobs, with Foxconn leading at 41,000, followed by Wistron and Pegatron, according to a report by Times of India.
The minister also shared that Apple has launched a new program to educate women about their health. They’ve allocated $50 million for this initiative as part of their Supplier Employee Development Fund.
The creation of iOS apps for Apple devices such as iPhones and iPads has generated more than 1 million job opportunities. This means many people can work and earn money by being involved in app development, including tasks like designing, coding, testing, and marketing. As a result, iOS app development has become a significant industry employing a large workforce globally.
