The National Health Claims Exchange (NHCX) portal is now available for claim settlements, marking the beginning of a more streamlined and efficient era in health insurance claims.
On Tuesday (9 July, 2024), HDFC Egro said it has successfully processed the first claim through the National Health Claims Exchange (NHCX) platform.
National Health Claims Exchange (NHCX) aims to simplify and speed up the process of settling health insurance claims. It will achieve this by facilitating the smooth exchange of information and documents between hospitals and insurance companies, ensuring a more efficient and standardized approach.

What is the National Health Claims Exchange (NHCX)?
The National Health Claims Exchange (NHCX) is a digital platform designed to simplify and automate the health insurance claims process in India.
It integrates hospitals, insurers, and third-party administrators, enabling faster and more efficient claim settlements. By using advanced technologies like cloud computing, NHCX provides real-time, secure access to claims information.
This reduces administrative burdens, speeds up the approval process, and helps prevent fraud. Ultimately, NHCX aims to simplify healthcare billing, reduce waiting times for patients, and lower operational costs for insurers.
Faster Health Insurance Claim Settlement
The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) now mandates that all cashless claims must be processed within 3 hours of receiving a discharge authorization request from the hospital. If it takes longer than three hours, any additional charges incurred will be covered by the insurer from their shareholder’s fund.
For health insurance policyholders, the National Health Claims Exchange (NHCX) platform will speed up the claim settlement process, reducing the waiting time for hospital discharge. This simplified process is also expected to lower claim processing costs for insurance companies, thus reducing their overall operational expenses.
Advantages of National Health Claim Exchange (NHCX)
– NHCX aims to make the cashless claims process faster and easier, potentially cutting down on waiting times and out-of-pocket expenses for patients.
– By eliminating the need for multiple portals and manual paperwork, NHCX reduces administrative burdens for hospitals and simplifies claim processing.
– The platform also promotes a standardized approach to healthcare pricing by using uniform data presentation and centralized validation.
– Additionally, NHCX can help detect and prevent fraudulent claims through thorough data verification.
Changes for Health Insurance Policyholders
Currently, when filing for cashless claims, policyholders must submit their health insurance card and relevant documents to the hospital. The hospital staff then manually completes claim forms, scans documents, and uploads them to various insurance company portals or third-party administrators.
At the insurance company’s end, the data is digitized, manually authenticated, and processed. The insurer or TPA then sends the necessary documents back to the hospital to finalize the discharge process.

With the introduction of the National Health Claims Exchange (NHCX), much of this process will become digitized and automated.
A common claim format, defined by the National Health Authority (NHA), will be used across both government and private health insurers and hospitals. Hospitals will access the insurer’s digitized details through the Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) number.
The NHCX portal will automatically validate these details before forwarding them to the designated insurer. The insurer will then digitally verify and process the claim, allowing the hospital to proceed with the patient’s discharge.
