Summary

Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath challenges the idea of children for legacy, advocating for a life of purpose through charity.

Nikhil Kamath, the co-founder of Zerodha, recently discussed his unique ideas on legacy and parenthood on the ‘WTF’ podcast. He expressed disinterest in the typical idea of having children to carry on the family legacy.

He expressed his refusal to devote two decades of his life only to the idea of receiving care from his children in his old age.

Kamath said, “This is also partly why I don’t have kids. I’m going to ruin 18-20 years of my life babysitting this child and then if luck serves me right, the reverse will happen at some point. What if he says ‘scr** you’ at 18 and leave anyway.”

When asked about his legacy on a podcast, he further expressed doubts about the concept. “I believe we often overestimate our significance… We’re born, we live, and we die like any other creature on Earth, and then we fade into obscurity,” said Kamath.

Further in the podcast, he says the urge to have children simply to be remembered after death is pointless.

“What’s the significance of being remembered after death? I believe one should live a fulfilling life, treat others with kindness, and make a positive impact during their time here.”

After pledging the majority of his money to charitable organizations last year, the co-founder of Zerodha became the youngest Indian to participate in ‘The Giving Pledge’.

He claimed that Wipro founder Azim Premji, Biocon founder Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, and Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani, all of whom are based in Bengaluru, were his inspirations and fellow pledgers.

ā€œSo, there are four people in India who have signed The Giving Pledge, the other three happen to be really good friends of mine. And Bangaloreans will resonate with this, all of them are from Bangalore. All four of us are friends. Me and Kiran live in the same apartment.. we all tend to meet once in a month for dinner or travel together,” said Kamath.
