Summary

Anupam Mittal, founder of Shaadi.com and judge on Shark Tank India, rose rapidly in the corporate sector through hard work, an ownership mindset, smart positioning and becoming a multimillionaire in his 20s.

Anupam Mittal is one of the coolest sharks in Shark Tank India. Before becoming a Shark Tank India judge and the multimillionaire founder-CEO of People Group and Shaadi.com, Anupam Mittal was one of 20 members growing up in a tiny 1000-square-foot flat in Malad, Mumbai.

On The 1% Club Show with Sharan Hegde, CEO and Co-founder of The 1% Club recently, Anupam shared his inspiring journey. His story is not just one of financial success but of the impact of hard work, a lesson in what it means to be truly dedicated to one’s goals.

Anupam grew up in a joint family, with 20 members in the house. As he entered his pre-teen years, his father’s textile business prospered, allowing Anupam to dream big. Anupam was influenced by the pull of America, with its Hollywood movies and English music and set his sights on an education in the United States, which was made possible by his father’s willingness to fund it but, fortunately, he got a paid scholarship.

Post-education, Anupam faced the harsh realities of a recession-hit job market. Yet, he did not waver. His dedication led him to a company called ‘MicroStrategy’, marking the start of an extraordinary ascent in the corporate world.

Despite being offered a starting salary significantly lower than his peers, Anupam’s work ethic and ownership mindset saw him rapidly climb the ranks. Within a year, he moved to the company’s headquarters and became an important person within a startup within that company. Soon after 1 more year, he became the director of strategic partnerships. His compensation soared to $100,000 and also had a lot of stock options with the company’s valuation skyrocketing from $100 million to $40 billion, Anupam’s stock options made him a multimillionaire.

How did Anupam Mittal get promoted so fast?

Anupam’s philosophy was simple: work hard and treat the company as your own. He believed in leaving things better than he found them, a principle that earned him respect and recognition.

“I leave things better than you found them, even if something was not from my department or somebody from other roles I would question everything, so people pick up on that ki boss this guy demonstrates a lot of ownership,” Anupam said in The 1% Club Show with Sharan Hedge.

The second part was positioning himself. Once he reached that position then he would have asked for whatever compensation he wanted. When it came time for salary reviews, Anupam’s results spoke for themselves, allowing him to negotiate his worth confidently. He got more than his peers and additionally, he had a lot of stock options.

Anupam’s life in the US was a far cry from the crowded family home in Malad. He drove sports cars and enjoyed the lifestyle of the rich and famous, a true embodiment of the American dream.
