IndiGo airlines announced on Thursday (May 23, 2024) that it will be introducing business class on select domestic flights this year.
This marks a shift from its traditional single-class cabin approach, catering to the growing demand for premium services among urban Indians.
IndiGo currently offers only economy class on its flights, along with a few extra leg-room seats.
But the new business class will be available on its busiest and most popular business routes. More details on launch dates, routes, and product offerings will be revealed in August.
IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers said in a statement that the airline is always seeking to innovate its service offerings.
“As India’s most preferred airline, we are constantly looking at innovating our service offering for our millions of customers. Over the past 18 years, India’s and IndiGo’s growth stories have been closely interlinked. We believe as India gears up to become the third largest economy in the world, it’s our privilege to provide the New India even more options to choose from as they travel business,” said the CEO in a statement.

Next year, IndiGo expects to receive its Airbus A321XLRs. These long-range aircraft will enable the airline to fly to Western Europe, Japan, and parts of Africa. Additionally, IndiGo has ordered 30 Airbus A350-900 aircraft with an option for 70 more.
IndiGo to Launch Air Taxi Services
IndiGo will soon launch an all-electric air taxi service in India till 2026. It will operate 200 electric vertical takeoffs and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, costing around USD 1 billion.
Initially, the service will cover Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, with plans for expansion. The seven-minute flight from Connaught Place to Gurugram may cost Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 3,000.

IndiGo is currently the largest airline in India, with a fleet of 367 aircraft. The airline operates around 2,000 flights daily, capturing over 60% of the market share. Its success is attributed to its efficient no-frills operation, which is admired by many other Indian airlines.
It also offers a similar experience to many low-cost carriers worldwide, where the basic ticket includes little more than a seat. Passengers can expect additional fees for meals, luggage, and preferred seating.
