Air India Express, a subsidiary of the Tata Group-owned Air India, finds itself embroiled in a crisis as around 30 of its employees face termination following a mass sick leave protest. This disruption has led to the cancellation of over 100 flights, causing widespread passenger inconvenience.
According to sources, the root cause of the protest lies in discontent among employees regarding new employment terms. Allegations of inequality in staff treatment, discrepancies in job roles despite clearing senior position interviews and modifications in compensation packages have fueled the unrest.
The management of Air India Express, in response, has issued an ultimatum to the employees, demanding their return to work by 4 pm today or face further disciplinary action. The termination letters cite the mass leave as a premeditated action that resulted in severe disruption to operations, causing inconvenience to passengers and significant financial losses to the company.

Air India Express, in a statement, assured passengers of their efforts to minimise disruptions and offered options for refunds or rescheduling for affected flights. However, the airline expresses disappointment in the actions of the protesting employees, vowing to take appropriate steps against those deemed responsible for the disruption.
The Air India Express Employees Union (AIXEU), representing the crew members, has accused the airline of mismanagement and unequal treatment of staff. Despite this, Air India Express maintains it does not recognize any employee unions.

Adding to the complexity, the regional labour commissioner has intervened, acknowledging the grievances of the staff as genuine. In an email to Air India Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran, the commissioner highlighted “blatant violations of labour laws” and urged corrective action, including the establishment of a high-level committee to address employee grievances and review HR department operations.
This crisis comes on the heels of recent disruptions faced by Vistara, another Tata Group-owned airline, indicating broader challenges within the conglomerate’s aviation ventures. As the situation unfolds, stakeholders anxiously await resolution, hoping for a swift return to normalcy in Air India Express operations.
