ITR Filing AY 2024-25 Start Date News: For the first time in recent times, CBDT has enabled taxpayers to file their Income Tax Returns (ITRs). But salaried employees will have to wait!

For the first time in recent times, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has enabled taxpayers to file their Income Tax Returns (ITRs) on the first day of the new Financial Year 2024-25, i.e. April 1, the Income Tax Department said today.

As per the IT Department, tax returns can be filed for AY 2024-25 (relevant to FY 2023-24) from the first day of the new FY (1st April onwards).

“For the first time in recent times, CBDT has enabled taxpayers to file their Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for AY 2024-25 (relevant to FY 2023-24) on the first day of the new FY (1st April onwards),” CBDT said.

Here’s a look at the facilities for ITR filing available on the Income Tax Website from April 1.

  • ITR-1, ITR-2, ITR-4 & ITR-6 are available to taxpayers on the e-filing portal from 1st April, 2024 onwards.
  • CBDT had earlier notified the ITR forms in December, 2023, and January, 2024.
  • ITR-3, ITR-5 & ITR-7 will be made available shortly.

Can salaried employees file now?

While ITR filing for AY 2024-25 has started, Salaried employees will have to wait till they get their Form 16 from employers. The date by which employers generally issue Form 16 is June 15. The last date of ITR filing is July 31 for salaried employees.

About 23,000 ITRs for AY 2024-25 already filed.

“In fact, about 23,000 ITRs for A.Y. 2024-25 have already been filed till date. Facility to file ITRs 3, 5 and 7 will be made available shortly,” the tax department said.

Currently, taxpayers have been enabled to file ITR-1, ITR-2, ITR-4 and ITR-6 for A.Y. 2024-2025 on the e-filing portal from 01.04.2024.

“The ITR functionalities i.e. ITR-1, ITR-2 and ITR-4, commonly used by taxpayers are available on the e-filing portal from 1st April, 2024 onwards for taxpayers to file their Returns. Companies will also be able to file their ITRs through ITR-6 from April 1 onwards, CBDT said in a statement.

Earlier, the tax department notified ITR forms early, beginning with ITRs 1 and 4. These forms were notified on December 22nd, 2023, ITR-6 was notified on 24th January, 2024 and ITR-2 was notified on January 31st, 2024.
