Summary

When asked for financial advice for students studying abroad, he said, "Just start! Even if it's just 1% of your monthly allowance, save and invest it."

Jagrit Gupta, a 23-year-old member of The 1% Club, has always been passionate about finance. After joining the club, he diversified his portfolio and decoded his family’s health insurance needs in six months.

Jagrit’s journey into the world of finance started when he moved to Germany in 2018 for a dual study program in engineering and management. After his internship at Continental (Motor Vehicle Manufacturing), he discovered his true calling. He was certain that engineering wasn’t for him. Instead, he fell in love with business and finance.

His career took off in 2020, during the pandemic, when he landed his first job with Allianz, an insurance firm. There, he learned the ropes of corporate life, from writing professional emails to understanding company hierarchies. His role evolved from project management to sales, where he discovered his knack for business development and client interaction.

In April 2021, Jagrit decided to explore the startup ecosystem, leaving Allianz to join a startup in Berlin, Germany. This move was significant because it meant a career switch & relocation in the midst of a pandemic. At the startup, he continued to hone his skills while simultaneously juggling his studies.

Although his parents supported him initially, Jagrit soon took up his financial responsibilities. “Pretty much the first two years in Germany were funded by them, but afterward, I paid my fees,” he shared. This transition marked the beginning of his self-reliance and determination to manage his finances independently.

By Feb 2022, Jagrit completed his degree but faced a dilemma: should he stay in Germany or return to India? He took six months to decide and meanwhile, he was also exploring new fields. He started a podcast and a marketing agency, showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit.

Choosing to return to India in September 2022, Jagrit started a new chapter while continuing to work for his German employer, RLC Solutions. During his time in Germany, he had managed to save a substantial amount, around Rs 4.5 lakh. This financial discipline was remarkable for a student, and he attributes it to careful budgeting and strategic investing.

While in Germany, he invested US stocks and precious metals to build an emergency fund and savings for the future. When asked for financial advice for students studying abroad, he said, ā€œJust start! Even if it is just 1% of your monthly allowance, save it and invest it.ā€

Later in late 2022, Jagrit stumbled upon a masterclass by Sharan Hegde and joined The 1% Club. The decision turned out to be a game-changer for him.

Jagrit says the courses provided by the club simplified insurance and investment, helping him sort out his family’s insurance needs. Within six months, he had secured health insurance for his family, a feat he credits to the knowledge gained from the modules.

However, he didn’t stop at insurance. He also diversified his portfolio, setting up Systematic Investment Plans (SIPs) in large-, mid-, and small-cap mutual funds simultaneously.

Jagrit says his investments are yielding returns of slightly over 11%. Despite short-term financial goals requiring liquidity, he ensured that a significant portion of his funds was invested in growth-oriented instruments. Today, Jagrit continues to balance his job while learning finance and the Indian market. Although his FIRE number is around Rs 8 crore, with his passion, strategic planning, and continuous learning he is already on his way to financial freedom.
