Finance Comic on May 16: SEBI eases its KYC norms

Sebi, the market regulator in India, has decided to make it easier for people to invest by simplifying the KYC process.

KYC stands for Know Your Customer. It's a process where financial institutions verify the identity of their clients to prevent fraud and ensure compliance with regulations.

Earlier, there were certain requirements for verifying information like PAN, name, and address. Now, Sebi is making it quicker by asking KYC Registration Agencies (KRAs) to verify this information within two days.

If the information verified by KRAs matches official databases (like the Income Tax Department's PAN database, Aadhaar XML, Digilocker, or M-Aadhaar), it will be considered valid.

Exchanges, depositories, and intermediaries (like brokers) need to update their systems by May 31, 2024, to accommodate these changes.

Last year, on October 12, Sebi released a circular consolidating all KYC rules for investors into one document.

This was done to make it easier for people to understand and follow the rules.

In simple terms, Sebi is making it faster and easier for people to invest by simplifying the process of verifying their identity, and they've consolidated all the rules into one document to make it easier to understand.
